Screen25 Cinema on Demand: Monsoon + Ultra Bleu
South Norwood’s much-loved community cinema, Screen25 is launching its Cinema on Demand platform to bring a curated season of independent films to your home. From 7 to 21 April, we are delighted to join our friends at Screen25 to co-present a two-week long online screening of Monsoon and Ultra Bleu, a double bill offering a sensitive study of self-identity, urban loneliness and unexpected encounters.
Hong Khaou, the writer/director of Lilting (2014), returns with this immersive study of love, alienation, and national identity. Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, The Gentlemen) plays Kit, a British Vietnamese man who visits Hanoi, Saigon, and Ho Chi Minh City on his first return visit to Vietnam in three decades. Aimless and unable to speak his native tongue, Kit searches for a place to scatter his parents’ ashes while rediscovering the homeland he and his family had escaped as ‘boat people’ following the Vietnam War. With careful attention to detail, perfect visual compositions, and a chest-pounding relationship developing between Kit and fellow traveller Lewis (Parker Sawyers), Monsoon is a new masterpiece from one of Britain’s most exciting filmmakers.
