The cheerful Nur works as a cook at an Islamic boarding school in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, where all the adult students are transgender women. Here, they can live the way they choose to, in stark contrast with the hostile world outside, where they are abused because their lives are said to be incompatible with the values of Islam. ‘Say no to LGBT’, instruct posters in the street, warning of a ‘contagious disease’, while the women have to be alert against the police and extremist groups. Nonetheless, they continue to go about their daily lives: cooking, praying, singing, and occasionally taking an HIV test, enlivening things with self-deprecating jokes. Capturing the day-to-day activities of the women in a laid-back manner, director Tonny Trimarsanto’s deeply affecting documentary is a testament to the resilience of this community.
