Queer East will be launching a new publication this autumn dedicated to fresh perspectives on LGBTQ+ cinema, arts, and cultures from East and Southeast Asia and its diaspora communities. This new magazine will serve as a platform for both emerging and established writers to share thought-provoking and playful reflections on queer Asian film and visual cultures.
Queer East is looking for writing that moves beyond a single perspective, encouraging contemplation and depth, whether revisiting classic works or offering insightful analysis of contemporary arts and cultures. The magazine will be available both online and in print, with the inaugural issue set for release in winter 2025.
What are we looking for?
We are looking for unique voices and perspectives on LGBTQ+ cinema, arts, and cultures related to East and Southeast Asian communities, or wider Asian communities.
Your article should focus on works of media and/or art, including but not limited to film, literature, dance, theatre and visual arts. Successful pitches will have a specific angle on, or argument about, your topic, and be able to demonstrate why this topic is a good fit for both you as a writer and for the publication.
The proposed articles can be reviews, features, or interviews. Please note that for interview pitches, you will need to demonstrate the ability to access your proposed interviewee, for example, through established connections or networks.
Submit Your Pitch, Timeframe and Fee
Your pitch should be 250-300 words in length. You may only submit one pitch. Please fill out this submission form by midnight on Thursday, 17 July.
If your pitch is successful, you will be notified by the end of July and be given 4 weeks to write the article. After the editing process is complete, you will receive a £180 flat fee for a 1,000-word article.
In rare cases, where articles do not meet the required standard, we reserve the right not to publish your article, and the editors’ decision on this is final.
Important Notes
This is not an academic journal, so please do not submit proposals for academic articles, papers, or writing that is heavy in theory and jargon. The publication is intended for a general readership, so your writing should be accessible and clear. Please do not submit completed articles; only pitches will be considered.
If you have any questions about submitting your pitch, please contact Yi Wang at info@queereast.org.uk, with Queer East Magazine in your email subject.
