The blue hour is the time between day and night, the realm between dream and reality, the space between good and evil. Inspired by a true story, the film is about the relationship between Tam, a young gay loner, and Phum, a mysterious guy he meets on the internet. Tam is constantly bullied by classmates at school and faces multiple pressures at home. One day, he arranges to meet Phum at an abandoned swimming pool, where they have sex and begin a passionate relationship. But events soon take a violent, hallucinatory turn, as Tam commences a disturbing journey of self-discovery. Anucha Boonyawatana’s feature debut moves deftly between genres including Boy Love, family drama, and horror, gradually evolving into a nightmarish vision of repressed sexuality and desire.
This screening is followed by an in-person Q&A with the director Anucha Boonyawatana.
